Everything Cats Expect You To Know

Holding a catI'm extremely fond of cats, and here I am with Poppy (who was in 'Put me down!' mode at the time) to prove it.

It was lovely to be asked to write about those endearing feline habits, and producing Everything Cats Expect You To Know was very much a labour of love.

Poppy decided to come on board as well, as my feline 'helper'. Yes, I know, cats can't write. They're not that great at doing research, either. But where they excel is in enlivening the working day. My brief for Everything Cats Expect You To Know, was to turn out a big miscellany of information about all things feline - facts about cat care and cat physique, stories, myths and legends, interesting snippets about famous cat owners, thoughts about how cats inspire artists, writers and everybody who loves them.

There was a lot to write, and the deadline was tight, so for a couple of months I disappeared into a welter of books, encyclopedias, newspaper cuttings, web print-outs, you name it - anywhere that I might find a new piece of cat stuff, I had it.

Poppy - who was an elderly lady of 19 at the time, and alas is no longer with us - wasn't always welcome in my office, as she liked to edge up to the screen, lounge about on my papers, or snuggle up on my lap and stop me getting anywhere near my desk.

But she seemed to know that this was a special project, which needed her input. I studied her as she chased the reflection from my watch - and wrote about cats playing. She lolled about on my pile of Bronte books, as I dug around for quotes from Charlotte B. When inspiration dried up, cuddling Poppy seemed to help. Listening to the purring, fondling that fluffy white chest - it's all very soothing.
